Cybercriminals use phishing attacks to steal personal identity data (such as Social Security Numbers) and financial account credentials (including credit card numbers) for criminal purposes. In their attacks, they use a wide range of social engineering techniques, including spoofed emails and fraudulent websites, to trick recipients into revealing their credit card numbers, account usernames, passwords and social security numbers. They also use technical ploys to install crimeware on PCs in order to steal credentials directly. The obtained data can then be used or traded for illegal profit. Financial data remains the favorite target, with a spike in phishing attacks following the announcements of various bank failures at the end of 2008.
Source: Anti-Phishing Working Group The Anti-Phishing Working Group noted that during the first quarter of 2008, the number of crimeware-spreading URLs infecting PCs with password-stealing code almost doubled - making it a new favorite for phishers. Phishing presents a problem for corporations. If their employees are not protected, enterprises could be held liable for failure to prevent fraud. A successful phishing attack could also result in employee login information being compromised, allowing a phisher to get access to an employee’s network account and thus accessing confidential corporate information.
